The Ponderosa Winery is the largest Riesling vineyard in New Mexico. The grapevines grace the southern slopes of the Jemez Mountains, rooted in deep well drained ash deposits -- an aspect and circumstance that has proven itself most suitable for the Riesling and Pinot Noir grapes that are the mainstay of the Ponderosa operation. Visitors are treated to a tour and wine tasting. The winery and vineyard staff are notably warm, down home do-right folks -- folks you trust to help you pick out a good wine. While the winery and vineyard grounds don't require a big block of time to explore, you'll find yourself wanting to linger and hang out with your new wine buddies. Wines of note: The 1998 Merlot has a satisfying round mouth with a peppery afterthought -- reminiscent of a big Zinfandel; the Late Harvest New Mexico Riesling, pressed of wines after a hard frost for a luxe sugar content, is a curvy sexpot of a sweet wine. -- l.s. galloway
