South of the New Mexico border, a merriment of moles, asada, and meats steeped in sun-dried spices awaken taste buds and titillate tummies. Calbrito (goat), tacos pescado (swells of cod) and cochinita pibil (pork and citrus steamed in banana leaves) are par. But one need not venture across the border to savor such peerless offerings. Leo and Marta Nuez celebrate their native Guadalajara and Guaymas with these same geographically distinct dishes at their restaurant, El Norteo. The exotic menu-seven pages of detail-takes an afternoon on the restaurant's lovely patio and perhaps a couple of Negra Models to devour. The culinary tome is as fat and delicious as Chef Nunez' de nopales, tacos stuffed with marinated cactus leaves, which we shared. The most seductive offering, however, is the carne adobada, pork marinated in El Norteo's special blend of chile, garlic, cumin and oregano. The gentle sweet-smelling fusion awakens even the most finicky taste buds. The menu is also a tutorial in the Spanish language. Botanas, postres, and puerco may cause pause for those of us whose Spanish vocabulary is limited to "Buenos dias." Fortunately, menu translations save face.

By wthrsttn on 02/09/2004
I've been there a few times and I'm NEVER disappointed by the service or food. The green tomatillo salsa is the best - don't bother get it in the salsa, get it by going to the restaurant!!!! SLM

completely amazing food, quite different from the ordinary run of the mill Mexican food....the cochinita pibil ( Pork cooked with citrus ) is amazingly fine as is the chipotle chicken....the chicken mole is rich and complex. The place is not even slightly ritzy....but the food is lovely. The green chile salsa is a revelation...it seems to be made with liquified avocado....I always take some home to savor. You will not be disappointed if you enjoy something different& absolutely authentic.

Excellent - such a varied, authentic menu. Delicious. They now have a lunch buffet, many selections & all top-rate. Going here will spoil you for other places with just average food & same ol' menu items.

The food is consistently great and different (it's authentic Mexican, not New Mexican--not that there's anything wrong with the latter!). The shrimp or chicken in chipotle sauce is heavenly, the chicken or fish Norteno excellent, the chicken or fish Montado outstanding. My wife loves the shrimp tacos. To others who didn't rate this restaurant highly--you may have been to the "other" El Norteno, stolen name, different location. Be sure you're rating (and eating at) THIS place!
