The secret's out. Actually it's been out for quite some time now. Once upon a time, Scalo's Northern Italian Grill was the preferred local hangout for those who coveted Italian cuisine with a neoteric twist. But Scalo's reputation for serving simple and satisfying cuisine leaked out. The restaurant has received rave reviews by glossy magazines like "Gourmet." The nationally acclaimed Scalo creates pasta and breads "on location." The restaurant's white linen-topped tables inside and its covered, temperature controlled patio outside, are occupied not only by the locals but also by tourists. Scalo serves antipasti, salads, wood fired pizza , oodles of pasta dishes and a selection of desserts that change daily. Dishes take on a new attitude when New Mexico produce is in season. We favored the antipasti in the caprini con pumante-a delicious blend of warmed goat cheese with focaccia, capers, roasted garlic and tomato tapenade. The pasta dishes are blanketed with a slew of palate pleasing condiments; the lasagna is especially noteworthy. Scalo's also offers beef, chicken and seafood dishes and an excellent wine list. Another plus: There's a wine for every dish.

The tables are linen covered, but then covered with butcher paper giving less than the ambiance of Carabas. The wine list is impressive, but they have none in stock. The bread was stale as we found that they do not bake it there. It is delivered weekly and heated there to make us think they baked it (nice). My in-laws recently visited us and my wife and I wanted to take them for a nice dinner. They saw a nice review of Scalo in the airline magazine, so off we went. What a mistake.. We arrive for our reservation to have the manager sit us at the front of the restaurant for over 30 minutes while being ignored and watching people who arrived after us without reservations seated prior to us. When I said something to the manager, she said "let me get you a glass of wine". I don't know where she obtained this wine, but it certainly was not from a bottle. Finally we are seated and when our food arrives after a short eternity, we faced further disappointment. The food (as they call it) was luke warm and substandard. The pastas were undercooked (not aldente, undercooked) and the meats were tough and tasteless, as if they had been frozen and refrozen. My mother-in-law could not even palate her $29 ribeye steak. When we requested assistance from our waiter, he went to the manager, and older woman whom we heard across the restaurant raised her voice to the waiter saying "I don't have time for their sh*t!!" never came to assist. Strangely, she was doing nothing but talking to the cook while having what appeared to be a cocktail. The waiter then went to another manager who was a very young looking woman who said, "I will be right there." She quickly disappeared into the bar where I later saw her sitting, never to return to our table. We were more than outraged and embarrassed. Finally, we chose to pay for our disappointing dinner and leave. The only person who even attempted to give us a good dinner was our waiter who I feel very sorry for. At least he cared enough to try......

I've been there twice recently. It wasn't the best. Everyone else seemed to really enjoy it though.

Previous visits to Scalo were in line with reviews. More recent visits have been very disappointing. Now we don't take out-of-town guests to the restaurant.
