A Real Review of Zach's
By Art DO 708 on 02/27/2009
I have been dining at Zach's for nigh onto 10 years. Like any restaurant it has it's good days (mostly) and very rarely some not so good. I have never personally visited the kitchen. However, 90+% of the time my wife and I go we get great food there and have never considered not going back. They do not have a fine cuisine menu, it is mostly just a step or 2 above bar food. But it is an adequate selection and everything we have ever tried there is great. Their strengths are in their salads and sandwiches and they also have some of the best fresh-cut "boardwalk" style fries we have ever eaten. And their "bloomin" onion is, in our opinion, better than the competition. The pizza is also pretty fair. The drinks are good, moderately priced and they always have a happy hour and beer specials. The prices for food at this restaurant are moderate at best and you get what you pay for--well above average food and drinks--especially for Altoona. I suppose that expense is in the eye of the beholder, the size and thickness of one's wallet and your own personal circumstances--but I do not consider this place expensive. As far as the "bar" aspect of the restaurant, it is a middle to high end sports bar that is well behaved and not frequented by riff-raff. It is not a hang out or pick up joint to any great degree. Families and groups of all ages are frequent diners, and there is plenty of non-bar seating in this nicely appointed and fairly large house. I would never hesitate to recommend going to Zach's for a nice, casual evening out for great food, good drinks, music, billiards and sports-watching, And don't forget to try their house salad dressing and also try the outdoor eating area, in season.

If the slowness of the staff doesnt send you running to the door, the rude attitudes will! Go to Al's or 4dz!

Best review yet!!

Don't let this place fool you, its external view may look classy but as for the internal, ask for a tour of the kitchen. It will blow your mind and you will find yourself disgusted. If you think the food is good, well you will change your mind after you see where your overpriced salads and pizzas are made, basically straight out of the dumpster. The wings are over cooked, which I bet sits around all day, and they taste like complete garbage. As for the pizza, never saw any consistency. If I wanted to eat raw dough, well then I wouldn't mind paying exaggerated prices for pizza dough that feels like it has been lying in the sun. Where is the consistency with the food. Outrageous prices for horrible food with crappy service in back of house and infront. The only decient positive aspect about this place is the drinks. Drink prices may be steep but where else can you hang out with a younger crowd who at least tries to have fun. Recommned you hit up McDonalds or Burger King for classier food before you head out to consume a few or more drinks.
