Tabernacle   

From the outside, imposing columns and a religious motif make this massive music venue look like the church it once was. But this Tabernacle isn't the place to go on Sundays unless you're worshipping at the altar of trance, metal, reggae, folk, funk or rock -- the funky rock palace hosts it all. The art on the walls at the 'Tabby' is as eclectic as the acts that thrill the crowds. Wall murals share space with a collection of weird antiques, bizarre modern sculpture and outsider art. To ensure everybody gets a great view of what's onstage, the Tabernacle's main performance area is sloped toward the stage, making a view-enhancing effect much like stadium seating. Though music is the main draw here, the Tabby also attracts events from fun to freaky, such as comedy acts and swimsuit competitions. The restaurant on the lower level serves lunch daily, and during the show, you can grab some chow for dinner. -- Jennifer Saylor
