Named after the food-focused foreign film 'Babette's Feast,' this romantic little bistro has been a fixture of the Virginia Highlands scene for years. Set in a restored bungalow halfway between the Highlands and Little 5 Points, owner/chef Marla Adams' eatery captures the casual charm of a European farmhouse, with wood floors and antique decor, and handcrafted details such as brightly painted metal pails to hold the baguettes. When the weather is warm, their popular patio provides the perfect spot to savor your meal while looking out over Freedom Park. Though best-known for offering one of the city's most popular Sunday brunches, Babette's is equally noteworthy for their impressive dinner menu, which changes to reflect the seasons. Their small plate menu of starters is perfect for those looking to sample and share, while entree selections ranging from vegetarian-friendly artichoke and olive ravioli to heartier fare such as grilled filet mignon with gorgonzola sauceprove favorites year-round. Don't miss their frequent special menu nights.

One of the best meals ever!

We recently visited Babette's Cafe for the first time, as we heard a buzz that it was a great restaurant. Wow! Were our friends right. We had a few incredible "small dishes" which were fabulous -- the mussels with the strawberry and peppers were great and so were the asparagus and leek tart and artichoke and olive ravioli. The wait staff was so friendly, but not bothersome. They knew about all of the dishes and were extremely knowledgeable about the extensive wine list. For dinner we had the Scallops with the Vegetable Bread Pudding and the Halibut with a Mustard Crust -- both were cooked perfectly and tasted amazing! We already made our next reservation! JR

Mediocre At Best

As a regular Sunday-bruncher, I was looking forward to trying Babette's Cafe based on their website and a couple reviews. I made an advanced reservation accordingly and was seated quickly upon arrival. Unfortunately however, the rest of my experience was such that I likely will not return.....based on the service, food and atmosphere. The server and host were both quite unfriendly and seemed unprepared to handle a busy Sunday crowd. The food was just average, I ordered a tomato & goat cheese omelet. The eggs were completely dry and the filling was nearly non-existent...while the multi-grain toast actually tasted stale.....I usually like heavy European bread, but this was just old stuff. I asked for something other than the whipped butter that was already on the table to put on it and was told in a surprisingly condescending tone by the waitress that's all that was offered. The indoor dining room was very nice if a bit close quarters, but the atmosphere was brought down a few notches by the loud children and flies constantly buzzing around our food. In any case, the place is clearly popular so I doubt my review will matter much...but thought I'd offer a fair opinion so others may not be as disappointed as I was. I'd gone there with high expectations, and at about $35/per person for a simple brunch I think the quality of the experience could be improved.

As the owner of Babette's I was very disturbed to hear about the overcharge of wine on the bill. If the guest had called, I would have immediately looked into the situation and reimbursed any overcharges. I can only assume this is an honest mistake by the waiter but I would certainly investigate that as well. Please accept my sincere apologies and don't hesitate to call me at the restaurant: 404-523-9121.
