Located on a residential street in the basement of a former boarding house, Chef Vola's is easy to miss -- and that is exactly the point. This extremely exclusive Italian restaurant (they are said to have turned away Billy Crystal when he didn't have a reservation) has no sign out front advertising the restaurant. Only a statue of the Virgin Mary marks the entrance to the basement location. The dining room itself is crowded and dimly lit with a simple decor designed to give it a relaxed atmosphere. All of the Italian dishes are homemade, although patrons dispute the quality: Some rave over the Neapolitan and Sicilian entrees while others feel the place is overrated. However, most will agree that the desserts such as banana cream pie with Oreo crust and hot apple ricotta are first-rate. Cafe Vola's presents the check to diners in a music box, but be sure to bring plenty of cash, the only accepted method of payment. -- Christy Barr

Beyond the worst
By mikefcti on 08/12/2007
Are you kidding me?? Chef Vola is only for people who are sold on hype not quality. I don't know how any upstanding Italian from South Philly could even waste their time there. I would rather eat at a hot dog stand. There are so monay better places in so many better locations it would do us all a favor and close.

from the minute i entered this place...i was taken back...the things i heard about chef vola,s is why we chose to dine there. what a waste...the food, the room, the guy running around to serve the ten tables was a disater...it was dirty, smelled like a wet basement and the nylon pink napkins and tacktydecor was enough for me...never again

Only for those who enjoy fine
By brdwybob on 03/08/2007
Chef Vola's is only for those that enjoy fine dining. The food is excellent. The portions are generous and the staff is great. It is a BYOB restaurant. Another plus! Lou and Dominick are the greatest, but don't tell them Bob said so. Be sure and save room for the home made desserts. You've never had anything like them! I don't know what I enjoy more, the entree or the dessert.

Epicurean Delight

Superb selection of expertly prepared Italian and continental dishes. Only for those who appreciate fine dining cuisine. The owner and staff are attentive to every detail. There is no better place to dine in AC or any of the surrounding counties. Atmosphere is atypical of standard restaurants, small room, close quarters, jovial conversations all add to the ambiance. Don't go if you are not a connoisseur of fine cuisine or want intimate conversation. For food lovers only. Have tried various entrees and all are excellent. You can't order anything that isn't delicious. Make reservations 4 weeks in advance for Sat. nite.
