In ShortThis local favorite has the ramshackle look of a boathouse that's missing its lake, but it makes up for it with its friendly, laid-back vibe. A UT undergrad hangout, this is a good place to kill an afternoon or evening with a cold beer and a burger or games of pool and darts. The vast beer selection is the biggest draw, but there's still top-notch pub grub like the bacon cheeseburger with fries.

Frequented by a mixture of UT law students and, well, people who aren't UT law students, this place has inexpensive beer (they were giving away 50-cent pints of Lone Star during the UT-New Mexico State game in September), and cheap (but good) eats. The waiters are freakishly entertaining, and there always happens to be a large, brown dog lurking about. He's friendly. Pet him.

My boyfriend taught me to appreciate beer and being laid back here. Helped me get over the club scene and enjoy a good conversation without screaming.
