Hyde Park Bar and Grill used to be someone's house, and it now serves a neighborhood clientele, although it does bring in Austinites from beyond the Hyde Park area. The interior decor is quite subdued compared to the exterior, where a giant foam fork may be found jutting out of the lawn -- one of several different giant food items impaled in the ground at all times. The menu is less bizarre, but it's also not as interesting. Sandwiches, pasta, soup, dumplings and other comfort foods are well-prepared, even if they're not entirely memorable. The fries, however, are renowned throughout Austin -- sources say the secret is in the batter. There's a full bar, and brunch is served on Saturdays and Sundays 11AM-3PM. -- Barrett Brown

Coated French Fries? Gack!
By Robotmeister on 07/25/2008
After reading that the coated french fries at Hyde Park were the top-rated in Austin a few years ago, I tried them. Call me weird but aren't french fries supposed to taste like real potatoes? These tasted like their fried coating... horrible! The best that I've tried? Quinn's in Seattle serves fresh cut otatoes fried in duck fat, then topped with Fontina cheese and a warm demi glace to melt the cheese. OMG! A delicious cholesteral speed ball that I keep dreaming about. Second best? Jasper's at the Domaine serves fresh cut fries topped with a buttery bleu cheese sauce that's a killer!

Favorite Lunch Spot

Always crowded at lunch. Try the grilled eggplant sandwich and fries. When available, the portobello mushroom sandwich is a lunch special not to be missed. Friendly, efficient service.
