Cant afford a vacation to Italy? Try Siena instead. Named for a town in the Tuscan region where the two founding chefs spent a month tasting and taking notes, Siena offers contemporary Italian cuisine and wines in a rustic stone building. Once inside the chunky limestone and wood building, youll be swept away by the aroma of the wood-fired stove, grilled meats and rosemary the region is known for. Pace yourself -- the menu is traditional Italian, where they start with antipasto or salad, move to a first or primo course of soup or pasta and on to secondi for the meat dish. Start with a traditional antipasto of salami, cheese, olives and pate or go for the lobster and leeks on portabello mushroom caps. The tomato soup is legendary or go for risotto or pasta with things like smoked salmon, shrimp and scallops, crimini mushrooms, chicken or wild boar. Hearty main courses include lamb, veal, fish, beef and pork. Desserts are simple - gelato, tortes, tarts, tiramisu and panna cotta (Italian flan). The dcor may be rustic but the clientele is decidedly uptown and knows its way around the extensive wine and grappa lists. -- Lynett Oliver

Siena is OVERRATED - it's Olive Garden but with bad service
By AGINGBULL62 on 05/25/2008
While the menu is inventive and the dishes, once they arrived, are quite good, the service and attitude are indicative of what is wrong with service in Austin restaurants today. There are a few places that understand the nuances the high service that are the hallmark of fine restaurants, Siena falls short. Despite a beautiful environment and an eclectic menu, the service and attitude is quite poor, if not downright condescending. We came for a special evening and were seating right away (that in an of itself a warning sign, given that we arrived at 8pm on a Saturday night during a holiday weekend). THe server was gracious and drinks and appetizers arrived on time and were tasty. And then we waited. And waited. 45 minutes later, our entrees arrived, one fresh and steaming, and the other congealed and skinned over like only a heat lamp can do. I spoke with the manager to alert her to the problem and she instantly became confrontational and defensive. She clearly was not capably of managing an establishment of this ambition. I've had many business lunches here and have never had a problem, but I will likely not venture there again for a dinner meal and I'd advise you to consider some of the better options in Austin that understand the meaning of service.

Incredible Tuscan Cuisine!

This may easily be one of the most beautiful restaurants in Texas. Everything we had was beyond our expectations, monster veal chop with superb sauteed mushrooms, excellent seafood dishes and great ravioli. We will be back!

20th Anniversary

Twenty years of a beautiful marriage should be celebrated. But where? We love Hudson's, Jeffrey's - but wanted something new. A friend recommend Siena. This is a special night. It only comes around once. We could not have been happier. The setting was romantic, the food superb, and our waiter perfectly attentive. We highly recommend Siena. Enjoy!
