The cheap prices and heaping tacos make this a favorite of many locals. As you drive up, cars are parked all over the place at odd angles like at a used car lot. A line often spills out of the door during lunch or breakfast rush hour. To avoid the lines, call in your order ahead of time. Inside, its noisy, crowded and hot. A dozen or more women buzz around the kitchen, prepping food and stirring huge pans of beans, eggs and potatoes on large industrial stoves. They dont skimp on the offerings. A pair of 85-cent tacos makes a meal. However, they spare no grease. The tacos are so loaded and juicy that you can burn a long time on this fuel or maybe you would prefer to lie down for a quick nap.

Good food at reasonable prices, but there are better values in Austin.
By Richardebeck on 07/04/2008
Good food at reasonable prices, but there are better values in Austin. For value in down-home cooking it is hard to beat Threadgills - either location, with free refills on vegies. Tr the spinach caserole, garlic cheese grits, fried green tomatoes or peach cobbler to go with authentic chicken fried steak, pork chops or chicken. Threadgills old recipe for chicken livers was better than the new healthier version. Other great values in town include Olive Garden's bottomless soup, salad and breadsticks. Try Carino's half price appetizers druing happy hour: Calamari, Pizza Margarita, and 2 side salads are perfect for my wife and me. You have to be a member but the food courts at Sam's and Costco offer quality and value for the price. Speaking of food courts, try the one at Barton Creek Mall -- good value for the price. You don't think of the Cheesecake Factory as cheap, but the food quality, serving sizes and service are among the best values in town. Speaking of value, don't tell too many people about 2 for 1 enchalada dinners at Serranos on Mondays. We don't want them to stop. Save money for margaritas and/or desert.

Wow- Couldn't believe the Miguas !!!!
By VmanfromTx on 06/02/2008
I didn't even know what Miguas was before I went to Tamale House. i fiqured I could spend a little more than $1.70 for two Breakfast Soft tacos...so I said okay "I want the Miguas" - nice dish...freshly cooked eggs and tortilla chips, and salsa- doesn't sound good - but the sides were refried beans and lots of hash potatoes...couldn't ********* all for $4.65 No ambiance...what do want - good food ... or BS waiters and waitress you need to tip....I'm going back.....I will try having just 2 or 3 soft tacos w/ egg chorizo for breakfast...Vman out.
