Vespaio   

Although this is about as New York-cool as it gets in Austin, Vespaio is much more than just a hipster haven. Fashion-forward foodies flock to SoCo (South Congress) for gourmet neo-Italian hits, including smoked duck and papparadelle fungi, which is folded over wide flat noodles and covered with a brandy cream sauce, shiitakes, portobello mushrooms, shallots and fresh tarragon. An impressive selection of fine wines and attentive service from a professional staff add to the allure. Make reservations or prepare for a wait -- often an hour to an hour and a half. If you luck out and snag a spot at the handsome, dimly lighted bar, abate your hunger with oysters or carpaccio, paired with a nice red wine. The dining rooms are more austere than romantic, marked by high ceilings and stained concrete floors. Not an ideal spot to bring the kids, but perfect for impressing clients and friends. Staples such as lasagna, osso buco and cannelloni are good choices for those less adventurous -- but be sure to wind up the night with the decadent chocolate souffle. -- Kelly Lee
