Mick O'Shea's is the kind of place where pouring the perfect pint is considered an art form. But that's to be expected of a place with nine beers on tap -- ranging from Guinness to Yuengling to the local Resurrection Ale -- plus an Irish cider. Dark paneling inset with family crests with names like O'Hara, Moran and Duffy, and exposed brick, keep the large open space feeling intimate. A stage right where the front room meets the back gives everyone a view of the act. Off to the side, a small room with low rough beams and a Celtic mural is the place to have a conversation. The menu is upscale tavern food with a British Isle emphasis. So yes, you'll find fish and chips, shepherds pie, corned beef and cabbage and bangers and mash (Irish sausage with potatoes and a whiskey mustard). But for a taste of what's on this side of the Atlantic there's a Porterhouse steak, chicken marsala and St. Louis ribs. While beer and food are important -- let's face it -- it's the music that makes O'Shea's stand out in the Irish pub crowd. Rocking acts like The Young Dubliners and Black 47 play here when they're in Charm City. And, of course, His Honor's Celtic rock band O'Malley's March are well acquainted with O'Shea's little stage. But it's not all rock 'n' roll; on many nights you'll find more traditional Irish music. And on open mike nights, who knows what you'll find?

Deceptive practices, flavorless food, and terrible ambiance
By MuphenRWhitney on 03/07/2009
This is the perfect place if you are looking for down-market ambiance, food to match, and deceptive practices. The place is noisy, non-too-clean looking, and the food -- while it LOOKS acceptable -- had no discernible taste. But the WORST part was the deceptive practice of "up-selling" without warning. I ordered THE ULTIMATE GRILLED CHEESE (in a hurry...three of us had just a little over 45 minutes before we were due at a concert a block away), which sounded interesting -- the menu listed a couple of different cheeses, tomato, and a choice of bacon or portobello mushroom on grilled bread for $7.50. The waiter asked if I wanted it served with chips or french fries. I asked him if the fries were made on the premises. He said no, but they were seasoned in the kitchen and were very good; so I said I'd have the fries. When the bill came the charge for the sandwich was $8.50. I queried the waiter about it, and he said it was for the portobello mushroom. I pointed out that the menu did not specify a charge for the mushroom. He went to get a Manager. The "Manager" came over and said the charge wasn't for the mushroom, but it was for the fries. She pointed out in tiny print at the bottom of the menu that sandwiches were served with chips and there was a list of things -- including fries -- that were available for $1. THIS WAS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MENU IN VERY FINE PRINT. I had not read that far, because the sandwich I wanted was no more than halfway down the page. The waiter said NOTHING about an extra charge for fries...and he did not tell me that the extra charge on my bill was for fries; he said it was for the mushroom. The "Manager" proceeded to argue nastily with me and told me it was the waiter's job to "upsell" me! She said if I went to a McDonald's (AS IF!!!) I would be asked if I wanted to super-size my menu, and I would have to pay extra for that. I definitely did NOT understand the correlation between that and the situation at her restaurant. She was extraordinarily nasty -- I wonder how long this place will be in business in this economy? I don't usually patronize this type of down-market restaurant - perhaps this IS business as usual. (It had been chosen by one of my fellow concert-goers because it was close to the concert venue). So be forewarned -- yukky surroundings, miserable help, deceptive practices, and food that needs some flavor.

Once
By whittenmd on 02/22/2007
Last summer my wife and I were told to go to Mick O'Shea's while we were in Baltimore for a conference. As soon as we walked in we were happy to see an Irish band tuning up and Guinness flowing like water (since water is only for tea and things that swim in rivers). The atmosphere was perfect for a relaxing night of debauchery. Even before we had finished our first pints we had been invited to a pre-bachelor bachelor party that was going on in the dart room. After handing out a few rounds of smackdowns, being that the partiers perhaps too much of the stout we returned to the bar for perfectly made Car-bombs. We stayed and drank "until the barman said it was time to go" and my wife and I left saying our farwells "in a language that the Clergy do not know". We then hopped in cab and were raced back to our hotel whewre my wife had but two hours to be ready to go back to her conference. That was one Hell of a night! Mick O'Shea's Irish Pub, I salute you!
