Hotel restaurants get an undeservedly bad rap for doling out chain grub or unappetizing fare to hungry travelers too tired to walk another step. Not so at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel, where Windows Restaurant and Lounge offers hearty portions, a friendly bar and a bonus for the weary new to Charm City -- a panoramic, fifth-floor vista of Baltimore's harbor and Federal Hill. A sign at the door warns patrons to set their pagers and cell phones to vibration mode, so as not to disturb the aura. A long, deep mahogany bar opens to a roomy area replete with sofas, chairs and a cigar humidor. About two dozen wines are available by the glass. Move to the restaurant and you'll see a collection of locals who have fallen prey to Windows charm, hotel guests and downtown businesspeople (many of whom partake in power breakfasts or the daily lunch buffet). Seafood is plentiful - what would you expect in a harbor town? Everything from calamari and clams as appetizers to pan-seared sea bass and wood-grilled yellow fin tuna for entrees. You'll also find chicken, chops and steaks. If you're in a hurry or need the perfect gift from Baltimore, Windows offers a crab cake-to-go package. -- Pete Kerzel

Valentines Day 2008
By smitty9898 on 02/15/2008
February 14, 2008: I decided to surprise my fiancé with reservations at the Watertable for Valentines Day. We have been to most of the top notch restaurants in Baltimore, and I wanted to give her a new experience. I had been to Windows (previous name) a long time ago, and was thoroughly impressed. The new décor of the Watertable is excellent. Here is a short summary of our experience: Best view in Baltimore City (cant be beat), mediocre food (a bit overpriced), mediocre service. The waitress seemed very awkward, and not sure of herself or the menu. She may have been new. Not sure. She seemed very busy; however the restaurant was not completely filled (kind of awkward for Valentines Day). On Valentines Day, a limited menu was offered (Main Course: Crab Cakes, Filet, and Grouper). We decided to go with Crab Chowder, Crab Cakes and Filet. The filet was cooked to temperature requested but was extremely fatty (I neglected my golden rule to not order steak at a non-steakhouse). The crab cakes were O.K., they had a good amount of filler. The desert was a mousse in a wine glass. The mousse was awful, and tasted like it had been in a refrigerator for a couple days. If you are looking for a place that will “wow” your date, or a visitor to Baltimore, this is the place to go. If you are looking for excellent food, I would try another place. Parking: The restaurant is located at the Renaissance Hotel. You can valet your car on South Street, or park in the garage under the Renaissance. Cost: Our bill was $200 with tip, however it was Valentines Day and we like to throw down a few cocktails. Dress: Business Casual to Jacket and Tie.

Don't bother going.
By lola1976 on 11/07/2006
The view was beautiful, the restaurant itself was pretty, but that's the extend of the positive feedback you'll hear from me. My boyfriend and I went and ordered steaks (I asked for the filet, and he the strip). I literally had a 5 minute conversation with the waiter about how I would like my filet cooked. I asked for it MEDIUM WELL, hoping it would be a light pink center. It was black as a leather shoe. My boyfriend requested no veggies on his dish (he's allergic) and it came out with veggies. He requested them to take it back, as did I and my steak came out RARE. They took his steak back and he got back the same steak. He specified he would like another piece of beef, since he didn't eat veggies and could not eat meat that touched them, so he took the steak back (in a huff) and said it would be another 25 minutes for a new one. The waiter came back 15 minutes later and told us that there were no more strip steaks and they'd like to offer him a prime rib. He agreed and it came out rare and it was all fat and grizzle. All this went on for over an hour and the manager never came over, just stared at us from afar. My boyfriend approached the manager after this was all over and asked that we don't get charged for the rare prime rib that he got that was all fat anyway. The manager laughed with the waiter while they were in plain sight of us and adjusted the bill. HORRIBLE experience altogether. And the manager has no managerial skills.
