While portions of this 8-building inn date back to the 1770s (it was a vinegar plant), the entire property was completely renovated and expanded in the mid-90s. Ingenious planning and design produced 80 charming, strikingly outfitted guest rooms. A select few have whirlpool baths; even fewer have balcony views of the harbor. The hotel offers no health club facility, but guests may utilize the Downtown Athletic Club for a small fee, and be transported there in the hotels van. Ask at the desk about this service. The renovation resulted in a rooftop banquet/meeting facility, which offers not only fabulous food (catered by Hamiltons, the hotel's excellent and popular restaurant) but equally fabulous views of the city and the harbor. A complimentary continental breakfast is served to hotel guests. Fells Point, once the heart of a thriving ship- building industry, is now a series of charming restored buildings housing galleries, shops, restaurants and taverns along cobblestone streets. It's a very popular nightlife destination. While a little removed from the heart of things in Baltimore, it's easily accessible by water taxi a fun experience all by itself. -- Tracey Meloni
