Since its opening in late 2002, Cafe Mocha has been an oasis on an otherwise barren stretch of North Howard Street's antique row. Located across from Maryland General Hospital, this inviting coffee shop draws plenty of workers in scrubs -- and health care types know a thing or two about coffee and its stay-awake properties. Cafe Mocha offers plenty for java junkies -- house blend coffee, espresso, caffe au lait, latte and cappuccino. Patrons can cozy up on the big couch inside the front door, take a seat at one of seven small tables or grab and go. Food is available during breakfast and lunch, and though it's nothing fancy, it is inexpensive and filling. Breakfast offerings include bagels, muffins, croissants, Danish and a sampling of yogurts. For lunch, there are homemade soups and salads, as well as a variety of sandwiches, such as turkey, tuna and veggie wraps, and Paninis. Chicken quesadillas and quiche are also on the menu, which includes daily specials. The emphasis at Cafe Mocha is on rest and relaxation, so even if you have only a few minutes to spare, that's plenty of time for a quick cup of joe and a cursory read of the day's headlines. -- Pete Kerzel
