Rate and Write a Review Good restaurants don't try to be something they aren't, and Mt. Vernon's Copra understands this mantra. The name is catchy -- it is derived from the word used for the part of a coconut used as fuel -- and its wooden accents and two-story dining/lounge combo suggest trendy hipness. But Copra is, at heart, a comfortable place serving pleasing comfort food. Simple, non-pretentious and fun, Copra exudes the confidence of grandmother's kitchen, masterfully melding old-fashioned favorites with just a hint of island bam (what, you thought Emeril had the market cornered?). Take Copra's crock of chili, which comes beefless, in a three-bean-with-lamb mix or with flavorful beef. Appetizers run the spectrum from slightly upscale (roasted brie) to pub grub (wings and a mini-meal of ribs). Paying homage to its Chesapeake positioning, one of Copra's meal-starters is curried crab cake sliders, a grouping of backfin and seasoned breadcrumbs on small brioche. Copra puts its unique spin on brick oven pizza (barbecue chicken, anyone?), sandwiches (medionoche, a version of the Cuban pork loin/ham sandwich accented with gouda) and a club sandwich. But it's hard to beat the old-time goodness of meatloaf, herb-roasted chicken, rockfish casserole or a strip steak. -- Pete Kerzel
