You'll find Cantler's, the quintessential seafood shack, tucked at the end of a winding one-lane road in Annapolis. Get there early for the biggest crabs and grab a table on the breezy deck that overlooks the working docks and woody Mills Creek. Indoors, there's a dark-paneled dining room, rows of paper-covered tables and a bar. Cold beer flows freely, but you can also order bottomless iced tea and soft drinks. Seafood junkies come to Cantler's to feast on crabs, but if whacking your way through a meal doesn't appeal, there are plenty of other seasonal treasures to choose from. Watermen drop off oysters, shad roe, soft-shells, rockfish, shrimp, mussels, clams and anything else you can imagine that makes its home beneath the sea. Portions are hefty and come with typical seafood sides including shredded slaw, fries, potato salad and onion rings. After the meal, in your crab happy glow, you can wash off in the tub-size basin out back -- another sign that Cantler's is the real deal when it comes to crabs. -- Denise Iacangelo

lowered expectations now

It has been somewhat a summer ritual since moving to the DC area four years ago, taking the hour drive out to the Annapolis area. With out-of-town guests, we've been averaging three trips annually to take them to Cantler's and then on to the Naval Academy. I must say that with every passing year the crab sizes have been dropping, so value for the dollar has become less attractive. I've been willing to overlook this, but what finally made me change my mind is the (very spotty) unappealing service--more and more, no smiles and brusque manners.

Still Waiting...
By duhrocksezz on 05/13/2007
I went there last year and I feel like I'm still waiting for the food. It took about an hour for our food to get there, and when it came, it was like Long John Silver, only more expensive and not as good. The cool part was my uber-cool neighbor took us there by boat, kudos to him, he rocks. Another cool part, the live well w/ crabs and fish for the kids to observe/touch/feel. Has all the parts to be awesome, but the main parts, food and service...horrendous.The cool stuff ELEVATES it to FAIR...

1968 1/2

What would make people go to this place and eat? The menu is circa 19681/2. The service is pathetique. Greasy spoon that is the title. There only luck is to be near the water. Outside of that location they would last a day. It is so sad that so many educated people do not know the difference between good food and bad food. Hello the year is 20061/2, you are talking about cole slaw and potato salad delivered By Sysco and greasy onion rings, Hellooo where did you get your culinary education at Bobs Big Boys Cafeteria? Do you know where crab meat comes from lately???? Waterman drop off oysters, realy? Fill free to email me and I will show you the back stage!
