Rate and Write a Review First-time visitors to Dougherty's might want to make the trek by daylight, since the maze of one-way streets surrounding this hidden gem on the fringe of downtown's west side can frustrate even the best navigator. But your patience and map-reading skills will be rewarded with a friendly atmosphere that draws a mixed crowd of university students, dressed-to-the-nines theater- and concertgoers and neighborhood regulars. Exposed brick walls, beams and hardwood floors create a cozy atmosphere, with tables packed tightly together. The long mahogany bar winds like a fortress around a well-stocked collection of libations, and you'll be equally comfortable ordering a mixed drink, a beer or a shot. The menu isn't fancy, but the portions are filling. The usual appetizer fare, including jalapeno poppers and potato skins, is present. Daily specials change, though some form of catfish seems a constant. Platters -- like hot turkey, fish and chips or shrimp in a basket -- come with fries and cole slaw. There are 10 varieties of burgers (including black bean, vegetable, salmon and turkey for non-beef lovers) -- try the pub burger dressed with fried ham, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing. Chicken sandwiches are pleasing and come in teriyaki, Cajun and Caribbean varieties. -- Pete Kerzel
