When Faidley's regulars brag that the all-lump crab cake is out of this world, they're not joking. This revered seafood shop and raw bar in Baltimore's Lexington Market was commissioned to develop its signature dish for consumption aboard the US Space Shuttle. Luckily, Marylanders don't have to go quite so far to relish the mound of sweet lump crabmeat that's been drawing crowds since the shop opened in 1886. Critics and seafood aficionados regularly laud Faidley's crab cakes as the best in the Chesapeake -- and beyond. How many establishments serve different cakes made of different kinds of crabmeat -- lump, backfin or regular, in descending price order? There are other tasty delicacies from the deep available, including shrimp, clams and oysters. Don't forget favorites like cracker-sandwiched codfish cakes, affectionately called "coddies" by locals, or the soft crab sandwich. You can either head to the raw bar or grab your lunch (or an early dinner, since Faidley's closes at 5PM). You'll rub elbows with locals without emptying your wallet. -- Pete Kerzel

The Best
By LEIGHDOBE on 05/30/2008
I lived in downtown Baltimore for many years and ate crabcakes in many resturants over the years but none compared to Faidleys. I moved to Florida and have tried many more including the crabcakes sold on QVC and Phillips "Maryland Crabcakes" sold in Sam's Club and Publix and again none that match Faidleys. I now call the market and have them sent overnight to me. Very expensive but well worth the price!!!

Only crabmeat sauted in butter can surpass Faidley's
By Eileenaloha on 05/30/2008
I have hand carried Faidley's crabcakes to CT, OH & VA and shipped them to relatives in MD. Needless to say, everyone thought they were fresh and delicious. Lexington Market is an icon in Charm City and the funky atmosphere is conducive to eating, conversing or just people watching. I watched "Mrs. Crab Cake" herself make those delectible cakes. People MUST protect our beloved Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries AND the Atlantic Ocean (all waters) or we will lose our wonderful seafood.

Great Great Crab Cakes
By supersai21 on 07/23/2007
Ok so me and my girlfriend went to Baltimore for the weekend. My goal was to try crab cakes from G&M, Timbuktu, Faidley's while I was there. We went to G&M and Faidley's we couldn’t make it to Timbuktu they just closed when we got there. G&M are great crab cakes, very fresh and tasty. Chunky just the way I like it. As I was eating it I felt it was missing something like a distinct flavor or something but still great. I think they are a bit over price at $24! sandwich at $13 which is more reasonable. I feel it’s overpriced because the atmosphere doesn’t reflect the price. Looks like a hole in the wall diner type atmosphere. Overall I was happy and my girlfriend loved the crab cakes. Faidley's atmosphere was even worse but boy did the crab cakes make up for it. They are fresh and tasty and Chunky just like G&M. What sets them apart is as I mentioned G&M was missing something and Faidley's had it. Faidleys crab cakes has a hint of mustard flavor to it that gave that disticnt flavor to it. I also like the texture better at Faidley’s which was like a saucey texture against G&M that had a more breaded texture to it. It tasted amazing and was very happy. Overall they both great, there's no such thing as best it just personal preference. My girlfriend liked G&M better, while I like Faidley's better. Is up to you to decide what you prefer.

The Best. Period.

Worth a visit whenever I find myself at Camden Yards or the Inner Harbor. A Hopkins grad from the 70s, I have patronized this Baltimore institution for decades, and it never disappoints. Even the two shipments to Missouri when I lived there were very good, though I could not duplicate the fresh-from-the-fryer experience of Lexington Market. Preceded by the raw clams or oysters and accompanied by the brew of your choice, it remains my favorite Baltimore dining experience (even better than the late, lamented Hausner's and Chesapeake!)
