This is not the kind of bakery where you lounge around sipping gourmet coffee and nibbling on lemon tartlets. No, this is the kind of place where the grandmotherly cashiers call you "hon" and move you in and out of the tiny brick storefront with friendly efficiency. Two cases of Danish pastries, donuts, pies, breads, rolls and cookies dominate the front room, which is only ornamented with a third case fill with birthday candles and wedding cake toppers. There are more goodies in back, as evidenced by the signboard overhead with an exhaustive menu of Fenwick's baked goods, but you have to ask for many of them and some need to be ordered in advance. There's no seating, except for a cushioned bench along the front window, where the only lounging done is by customers waiting on an order. The place is always busy, especially around holidays. People travel to this corner of the city just for the bakery's pies topped with sky-high meringues and the aromatic cinnamon rolls.
