From the album cover enclosed menus to the homespun decor, Golden West Cafe provides a memorable dining experience. With artfully chipped green, orange and blue walls, murals depicting palm trees and cowgirls, and an extensive array of tapestries, pictures and memorabilia related to Western and South American culture, Golden West has a decidedly otherworldly vibe. Rather than kitsch for kitsch's sake, which seems to be the motto of many establishments that embrace quirky decor, everything here contributes to a theme, making the cafe feel like a portal from The Avenue in Hamden into a fantasy realm. Golden West's menu is an eclectic mix of American, Mexican and Asian influences. Unusual combinations of ingredients are commonplace in entrees like Mental Oriental sesame noodles, Frito pie, burrito platters and inventive sandwiches. Breakfast items, including French toast, pancakes, omelets and huevos rancheros, are served all day. To wash it all down, a special Key Coffee blend and a selection of wine and beer are available. The ubiquitous album covers provide a clue to the musical orientation of the cafe, which hosts Quiet Music Night, an evening of intimate performances from shining lights of the indie-folk scene, the second Sunday of each month at 10PM.

We dine here frequently because we can walk here, but of course we wouldn't keep coming back if we didn't enjoy it. My favorite dishes are the breakfast quesadillas, the vegan riblet sandwich, and the BLT. They serve wonderful coffee, and their side dishes are a step up from what you get other places. I have to knock a star off only because their dinner service can be slow-paced. Come early for the weekend brunch to avoid a long wait for a table.

Charming and quirky and friendly to all, including small children who have a play area all to themselves. The menu is a delight; my brunch /lunch was my first Huevos Rancheros -- hearty and tasty. Alas, the Piino Grigio at $5 a glass was not the best. Still, I can't wait to return !
