The sophisticated air at Hampton's, in the Harbor Court Hotel, is genuine -- from plush upholstered chairs and elegant table settings to warm, burgundy hues and impeccable service. Year after year, Hampton's is rated among the most elegant dining destinations in the nation, making reservations a must for dinner or swanky Sunday brunch. Classic and daring creations are served in a large harbor-view dining room that still offers adequate privacy. If you need to spend to impress, this is the place to do it, and lavishly at that. Unlike some expensive romantic settings, you'll get everything you pay for. Hampton's menu changes seasonally, but always includes a smattering of game and seafood dishes with Chesapeake roots. Special menus are available for those who want the four-course treatment, including a vegetarian selection that includes chilled cucumber soup, poached asparagus, fresh lemon farfalle and a rhubarb lemon torte. It's hard to go wrong on entree offerings -- crab-and-mustard rockfish, a veal chop rubbed with coriander seed or grilled duck breast are among the current dishes. A post-dinner stay at the ritzy Harbor Court Hotel isn't mandatory, but it is a nice touch for a romantic evening on the town. -- Pete Kerzel

Not good
By emcsquare on 05/29/2006
While visiting Baltimore overe Memorial Day Weekend, my girlfriend and I went here for Sunday brunch. Come on. $31 for eggs benedict that had watery whites. My girlfriend's omelet was so overcooked it was dry and tasteless --- for $30. She took a few bites and pushed it aside. The manager came over to ask what was wrong. She explained how bad it was. He offered to make her another one. She said no, as I was already half way through the eggs benedict. Then when the bill came, they didn't even take the omelet off it. I told the manager, and he did take it off at that point. Maybe their dinners are good, but you would be better served going to brunch somewhere else.

outstanding

I am not usually a fan of high-end restaurants; their reach so predictably exceeds their grasp. Hampton's is the exception. It is all perfect. The food is sophisticated AND appealling AND well prepared. The room is lovely. The people are well trained AND friendly AND knowledgeable. Expensive, and well worth it.
