Art on the walls and jazzy tunes in the air give this Federal Hill Japanese eatery a decidedly less traditional atmosphere. Servers in jeans and black polo shirts set an informal tone right from the start. A sushi bar runs the length of the restaurant and is the site of friendly repartee between the chef and diners. The narrow dining room's salmon-colored walls act as the backdrop for a rotation of work by local artists. An occasional Japanese print fills the space and reminds you what you came for: sushi. The menu does offer other Japanese dishes, such as tempura and teriyaki, and a selection of udon dishes, but the focus is on sushi. Sushi and sashimi dinners offer a medley of the more conventional raw options. But be sure to try one of the specialty rolls, such as the Baltimore roll, where Old Bay gives heat to the crab stuffed maki roll. -- Laureen Miles Brunelli

Always have a great time

My friends and I love this place. It's very laid back and friendly. We were made to feel so welcome on the first visit, we've been hooked ever since. The sushi is excellent and the drink prices are really reasonable. We'll be back next week!

Best I've had
By blingo5678 on 12/30/2006
This is the best I've experienced in Baltimore City. The flavor is very fresh......as it should be, and a lot of pride is taken in the presentation too. Extremely casual setting. Very reasonable check.

Freshest Fish in Town
By Staciavous on 05/14/2008
Nichiban is our "go to" spot. We're never disappointed in our meals or drinks. The fish is always cut fresh and never "fishy" which is the best. We've tried other sushi places in town and nothing compares to the quality of food or service we receive at Nichiban. We love that it's local with lots of "regulars" and everyone knows eachother so it is really like dining with family. And the chef makes everything fresh, teriyaki sauce, salad dressing, all home made. I also highly recommend the egg rolls or shrimp fried rice!! And if you're lucky, there may be some home made bread pudding! YUM!
