The scene at this Mount Vernon institution has changed little in its 35-plus years: The cozy, underground space is defined by elegant arches and flickering candlelight. Career waiters slip between tightly-packed tables topped with white linen and colorful pitchers of sangria, delivering generous portions of traditional yet innovative Spanish cuisine. Continental entrees such as filet of sole with bananas and hollandaise sauce and beef in a sherry sauce with mushrooms are splendid examples of the creativity displayed by the chef. Two of the best known dishes -- the paella and the roast suckling pig -- take extra prep time, so come early and enjoy some sangria while you wait. End the night with the legendary pine nut cake roll or the chocolate souffle. This is a nice place to take a date when you don't mind leaning in for an intimate conversations. Large groups may find themselves shouting across the table, adding to the considerable noise level. Reservations are an absolute must, and even with them you may wait. -- Laureen Miles Brunelli

Love it!

My family has been going to Tio's since it opened, and never once have we had a bad experiance. The food is divine, and well worth any wait. There is nothing bad on the menu, and even a few items not on the menu that are amazing. The intimate setting makes it great for dates, or large groups in one of the side rooms. Tio Pepe's is a must go for anybody visiting Baltimore.

This is the best restaurant

Best Restaurant in Baltimore. Want to have the best entree of your life? Get the trio. It has Shrimp, Crab Meat, Lobster, and Champagne sauce. It may be $40 some dollars, but it is worth it. You only live once.

horrible experience
By violingrl87 on 11/12/2005
I had a terrible experience at this restaurant. I was verbally and racially assaulted by another diner at a birthday dinner. This diner came up to my table and yelled at my party, frequenting racial slurs and obscenities. The restaurant staff was completely useless in coming to my defense. The offender was not asked to leave, and I was not compensated for my meal; the overall staff attitude was indifference. I must say I used to enjoy this restaurant's food, but I cannot eat at a place that allows such blatant assault to occur unstopped.
