Rate and Write a Review Without even trying, Washington Square Tavern comes far closer in spirit to an English pub than do most deliberate Stateside imitations of ye olde such-and-such. The dimly lighted spareness of the interior is directly proportional to the cheeriness of its patrons, who tend to gather round the bar in lively conversation even when theres seating to be had. (Granted, proximity to beer - the WST keeps a dozen imports and microbrews on tap -- may also be a factor in the tight crowd formation.) In keeping with the plain yet somehow homey decor - including, inexplicably, a bookcase - is an easygoing, effortlessly agreeable bill of fare that manages to merge the no-brainer appeal of bar food with New American culinary smarts. Salads are sprinkled with nuts and crumbled cheeses, mashed potatoes with herb-infused olive oil; sandwiches comport themselves with dignity, as with the mahi- mahi on brioche; and grilled meats and fish are generally left well enough alone to do their meaty, fishy thing. Prices arent overly elaborate either - appetizers run less than $10, entrees no more than $16. No dessert served here -- just a nice chance to relax, which is the best after-dinner treat there is. -- Ruth Tobias
