In the 19th century, the building evolved into a tavern. During the Civil War, it was owned by members of Gloucester's illustrious Babson family, from whom it derived its name. It was purchased in 1994 by current owners Paul Jensen and Donald Roby, who transformed it into a B&B. The inn is divided into suites of rooms that are arranged with families in mind. Each suite bears the name of a person who lived in the house at one time or another -- hence you have the "Nancy Proctor Suite," the "Fitz J. Babson Suite," etc. The suites are each unique in terms of their character and features: one has a spiral staircase leading up to an extra sleeping loft beneath weathered eaves; another has a parlor overlooking the cloistered rose garden and fountain. All of the suites contain private baths and a breakfast kitchen. To get to the inn, just ask anyone in Gloucester where the famous "Man at the Wheel" statue is (a tribute to fishermen lost at sea); the Inn at Babson Court is located just behind this memorial. --Kim Mattingly
