Even in the winter, the stylishly dressed patrons of Mojitos need a chilly libation, since -- holy mole! -- its hot on the dance floor! Since the swanky spot opened in Downtown Crossing in the summer of 2005, Latin music enthusiasts and dancers alike have breathed a huge sigh of relief, seeing the club as a worthy replacement for Sophia's, which closed in 2004. While house music, electronica and intermittent '80s nights dominate other DJ-ruled nightclubs, those who shimmy over to Mojitos find a Latin oasis pulsating with meringue and salsa music on two floors. Youre welcomed in style, with a red carpet, velvet ropes and bouncers who painstakingly give your outfit an once-over. (Sorry, guys, no sneakers.) Once you make the cut, it's hip-shaking heaven. The basement is basically a spring break dance party, with revelers rumbaing amid a colorful murals depicting Latin legends. On Thursdays, DJ Alex fronts College Night with a heavy lineup of Reggaeton and hip-hop. For the dignified party professional, a classy upstairs lounge provides ample room to strut your stuff. Salseros and wannabes alike can brush up their moves (or learn some new ways to shimmy) with free lessons and live music offered upstairs on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Ole!
