Rate and Write a Review What do singer Tracy Chapman and The Tonight Show's Jay Leno have in common? Probably not much; but, one common bond is an appearance at the Nameless Coffeehouse in Cambridge prior to becoming rich and famous. The Nameless was started in 1967 and is New England's oldest all volunteer-run coffeehouse. It began as a youth project of the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church but, gradually, grew away from the church and became an independent organization. The atmosphere at the Nameless is casual; sit down, have some refreshments, and listen to some great music; possibly a poetry reading or a lecture. A new friend you haven't met yet may be sitting at the next table. Until recently, a night at the Nameless was free. But, due to rising operating costs, small donations are now solicited at the door. Haven't paid this month's rent yet? You're still welcome to enjoy the show. The club is free to those who can't afford an admission fee. Shows at the Nameless are irregular; generally, about once a month. Call for exact dates and times. The Nameless is a Cambridge institution; a symbol of a time when the coffeehouse was a center of intellectual and social activity. It's definitely worth a visit - or two.
