Down the street from Quincy Market's ubiquitous Irish bars is a must on many a Saturday night clubber's to-do list: Sanctuary. The place is packed with an after-work crowd on Thursdays, while weekends bring an influx of suburbanites looking to get their groove on. The architecture of Sanctuary attempts to infuse a dose of existentialism into the mix; more than a few patrons note that the lounge's levels parallel heaven, hell and that space in between. Decide for yourself: The main floor is a cavernous space with two large Buddhas flanking the bar, the top-level dining room is bright with faux stars on the ceiling, and the descent to the basement dance scene is upon a red stairwell that leads into cozy dark room with red leather furniture and mirrors. Sanctuary offers a sophisticated drink menu, including designer martinis that look as good as the lounge's clientele. If you're hungry while checking the scene, an array of eclectic tapas is available. Come before 9PM on Saturdays to avoid the line and cover charge.

BEWARE OF SANCTUARY BAR
By z23b82 on 03/12/2007
My friends and I went to the Sanctuary at 189 State St on Saturday 3/3/07. Shortly after arriving a 6'3" patron began trying to fight our friend who stands at 5'3" tall. One of our friends who is about 6' stood between them and asked the GUY to go away that we were not looking for trouble. A short time later when his back was turned 6 bouncers APPARENTLY FRIENDS OF THE 6'3" GUY, removed our friend while holding us inside. They took him out the back door where they proceeded to beat him unconscious. He was removed by ambulance to the hospital. We believe that if the shorter friend of ours had not managed to sneak out to witness this horrible event that the bouncers intended to discard him unconscious into a dumpster to die. BEWARE OF THE SANCTUARY..POLICE ARRIVED AFTER THE AMBULANCE HAD TAKEN HIM TO THE HOSPITAL AND SO FAR THE GM AND OWNER HAVE JUST LIED TO PROTECT THEIR LICQUOR LIC. YOUR LIFE IS IN YOUR OWN HANDS AT THE SANCTUARY!!!!

What a let down......6/26/05
By bella3691 on 06/26/2005
This should not by any means be in the best of anything category!! The setting is far too small for the amount of people they try to cram in there. The bouncers do little to nothing to adequately protect the patrons. Two bouncers in the lower dance level verbally assalted a young women who went to them for help, and told the young women to leave. The only redeemable quality of this establishment are the bartenders, they were polite, and served quickly! IMO- Unless you like feeling like a canned sardine, and enjoy being treated poorly by the staff while you are trying to have a good time, STAY AWAY FROM SANCTUARY!

low energy level
By drbackbay on 03/23/2005
this shouldn't be under dance club as this is hardly a place to dance. the oven of a downstairs holds around 20 people. The girl i met I had to give her a towel so she could wipe the sweat off her face. the main floor is quite narrow - the 300 pound woman blocked the entire walk way. If you want to dance with a beautiful crowd - try Embassy.
