The Scoop: You don't have to spend much time in one of TJ Maxx's more than 600 stores before the key word strikes you: Affordable. You'll find brand-name apparel, home furnishings and more at 20 to 60 percent below department store prices. Usually about half the store is dedicated to women's apparel and accessories, from names such as Kenneth Cole and Liz Claiborne. Men will also find a good selection of everyday items -- most of them under $30 -- from names like Tommy Hilfiger. The children's department includes toys and toddler clothing in addition to boys' and girls' apparel. Home accessories are aplenty, if haphazardly displayed, and include everything from ceramic serving dishes to towels. The Scene: A controlled frenzy, new stock is constantly arriving so there are a healthy number of regular customers combing the aisles as well as those in search of a decent one-time bargain. Stores are attractive and functional with plenty of changing rooms, but without expensive frills to drive costs up. Insider Tips: This is no time to be shy. As is true of most off-price retailers, for the best deals, shop early, shop often and don't leave anything behind. If you see an absolute must-have, the time to buy is now as most likely it won't be there when you get back.
