The Beacon Hill Pub is a bar, and a simple one at that. It gets loud sometimes, drawing old guys from Beacon Hill who drink here when it opens in the morning and who close it up at night (unless they fall down first). The neighborhood hates it, which you have to love because Beacon Hill, for all its wonderful virtues, still has a Puritanical ethos. At the BHP, you will not pay $5 for a pint of fruit-tainted microbrew. You can get a Bud for a handful of change. Bored? Go to the "game room" and play a basketball game, foosball or pinball. There aren't many tables; it's a stand-up sort of place. The owners proudly display a clipping from a local newspaper's annual "Best Of" contest that rated the Beacon Hill Pub the worst, strangest establishment in Boston. You gotta love it. College students throng the place, and have been known to throw a punch or two. Mostly, though, there's a whole lotta wandering eyes -- harmless furtive glances between somewhat sloshed patrons. Prepare to show the bouncers at the door your ID no matter what your age. And don't be put off by its reputation because, after all, the BHP is what it is: a neighborhood dive bar that seems to not quite be in the right neighborhood.

It is what it is

The last review prior to this one said that there should be more of them. This establishment is part of a shrinking network of bars in the Boston area. I worked for this company for 8 years. Not at BHP but at a sister store---Sullivan's Tap across from the Boston Garden. I'm not quite sure what's left. BHP, The Tam on Tremont St in the theatre district, Sully's, and Mary Ann's in Cleveland Circle for sure. At one time they also had the "Father's" chain 1,2,3,etc. Also the Bow and Arrow in Harvard Square. They always host a cast of characters at each location. A minimum amount of problems and always a great beverage at one of the most reasonable prices in town. NO!! I don't want my job back but have to be truthful they have some interesting joints.

It's a place that says, "DIVE" ...and it IS! That kind of integrity is why I became an alcoholic! My highest rating : ~ IT DON'T SUCK!

Why oh why oh whyohwhyohwhy-oh doesn't anyone mention the Sevens? It's right up the street at 77 Charles St. and my cousin used to take me there when he drove a taxi... he'd get obliterated and I'd devour strawberry-covered cheesecake
