Do you remember Little Joe Cook? The guy who sang 'Peanuts' in the '50s? Well, he's pushing 80, but he's still around and he happens to rule this place. From Thursday through Saturday at the Cantab, Joe Cook religiously pumps out sets of R&B with usually one round of his famous 'Peanuts' or his more regionally known 'Down at the Cantab.' While the regulars may have their own seats here, newcomers are certainly made to feel welcome in this neighborhood bar. Monday and Tuesday are open-mic nights, and Wednesday features a blues jam (in which Cook usually takes part). On Friday and Saturday, the Cantab books shows in the Rail Room downstairs as well, mostly local rock-pop and blues, and on Wednesday you have your choice of the blues jam upstairs or a poetry slam downstairs. The Poetry Slam includes a $3 cover and usually consists of an open mic session and then a featured poet, followed by the infamous slam. It's a fun place to go, and it's worth it just to check out Little Joe.

My fav dive
By BostonMoeJo on 07/04/2008
Whoever wrote the aol review has obviously failed to visit The Cantab. Little Joe Cook hasn't performed there in years (credibility problem? I'd say so) Sunday and Wednesday nights The Cantab hosts an over the top blues/R&B/jazz jam. The heavy hitters usually hit around midnight. Monday is folk night with the best open mic in the Boston area. Bluegrass rules on Tuesday (get there early for a seat) Pricey drinks for a dive but the joint's got character to spare. Cowboy at the door and Mike behind the bar (Hi Mike!!!)

Music was okay, definitely for the older crowd. The bartender (an old lady) was kinda mean though

If you like Rythm and Blues, and a place where how you sound is more important than the way you look, then this place is pretty amazing. T
