Now that smoking is verboten at Franklin Cafe, guests no longer need to wait for tables in a Marlboro haze. And waiting is an essential part of any visit to this South End staple, where the scrum inside the door is generally so thick that even a greased pig couldn't make it to the bar. Once you've staked out a patch of floor on which to juggle your coat and drink, you'll have plenty of time to contemplate what keeps locals coming back to a place so perennially packed. The answer lies partly in the crowd itself, which reflects the neighborhood's congenial mix of ages, tax brackets and sexual orientations. A long block away from the foodie stampedes of Tremont Street, Franklin's clientele is less about culinary splendor than solid, satisfying grub. And -- as waiting rooms go -- its feng shui is far superior to that of a dentist's office, with tomato-colored walls providing a dramatic backdrop for several striking paintings. The affordable, late-night menu (the kitchen serves until 1:30AM) follows a modern American theme, offering inventive comfort food. Garlic-grilled calamari is adorned with pesto and served on a bed of baby white beans. Almond-crusted catfish has a surprisingly frothy sauce of fragrant tarragon and sharp mustard. There's no dessert, however -- a fact some find disappointing after the long purgatory of procuring a table. Linger over coffee, blood-orange martinis or a fresh bottle from the surprisingly affordable wine list.

My favorite place in Boston
By manthanh on 05/27/2008
The Franklin is my favorite place to dine in Boston! The atmosphere is casual but not too dressed down (you can wear jeans and a tee or a suit from work and fit right in), the food is outstanding, and the drinks are beyond good. The meals are always innovative, fresh, seasonally representative, and delectable. I even step outside my comfort zone and try new things here... every time I am pleasantly surprised at how good the eclectic combinations are! Enjoy the music played (usually something you remember from the good old days) and have a drink until your table is ready, it's worth waiting for!

Worth the wait
By krrock51208 on 05/27/2008
Yes, you might have to wait a little while to get a table, but relax, have a signature drink...its well worth it! The place was recently renovated. Same great atmosphere, just better....and WHY the wait? Because everything on the menu is less than $20, tastes amazing, and the service is fantastic. The menu changes quarterly...and kudos to Head Chef, Brian Reyelt for continuing to create unreal dishes and bringing so many different flavors to your palate!! Something has to be said when all the other restaurants close, and the chefs get off and go to The Franklin to eat dinner! Its a hidden gem!

Perfect place to grab dinner. Atmosphere is chic boston with a Cheers type feel where ever one knows your name. Food is out of this world. A bit of a wait, but worth every minute. Always get the muscles to start, best ever!
