Though you may get in trouble if you say its name really fast, "Fugakyu " reportedly means "house of exquisite elegance" in Japanese. And elegant it is -- if your idea of aesthetic refinement encompasses tatami rooms screened in rice paper, kimono-clad waitresses murmuring into headsets and a sushi bar surrounded by its own miniature moat (on which wooden boats circle aimlessly, as if to taunt the fresh fish they carry). If it sounds more like Six Flags than feng shui, it is: one half expects karate fights to break out in the darkened cocktail lounge. But this kabuki kitsch is the perfect compliment to a menu full of high notes, from authentic appetizers like usuzukuri (white fish with ponzu sauce and green onions) to eclectic sushi such as "caterpillar maki" (a roasted eel roll topped with ridged avocado slices). Though the sushi here can't compare to the utopian fare at Oishii, Fugakyu backs up its raw options with a full slate of Japanese specialties -- among them lightly battered tempura, grilled sea bass marinated in miso paste and a stir-fry with rare matsutake mushrooms. Adding to its eccentric appeal is the fact that the kitchen stays open past midnight, making it the lone option for after-hours dining in conservative Coolidge Corner. -- Julia Clinger

Cape Codder
By Ol Rob on 07/10/2008
We have an excellent sushi restaurant here on the Cape ("Inaho"".. but on a recent visit to Brookline, we lunched at Fugakgu, and LOVED it. There were four of us, and as we traded tastes among us, we all agreed that it was absolutely SUPERB.

Best Japanese in Boston?
By goodfella2487 on 04/10/2007
For those of you who don't mind throwing around a little cash, this restaurant boasts an authentic Japanese dining experience, complete with your own person dining room (enclosed with Japanese doors and all), excellent food, and great service. What's great about my experience at Fugakyu was that a Japanese exchange student who i am good friends with was able to fully explain to me all the exotic dishes on the menu. Chicken, Beef, Pork, Sushi, Springrolls, Soups, and Noodles are this restaurants forte. Any of them are a good choice. We started out with Sukiyaki, a delicious concoction of thinly sliced beef simmered in a skillet or pan in the sukiyaki sauce with many vegetables and other ingredients. It was absolutely fantastic. For the main course, I ordered the Yaki Udon noodles topped with a breaded chicken cutlet. This is not your typical bowl of noodles. They are very flavorful, even more so since they sit in a sweet Miso broth. By the time I was finished I was stuffed. For the money, this was the best dining experience I've had thus far in Boston. I'd suggest dressing in a golf shirt and dockers when dining here. Though dressy attire is not required, why not look classy if you decide to spend this much on a great dinner anyway? They are also available by delivery through Foodler. A must-try for Japanese fans.

Great Food but Poor Attitude
By yeeej on 12/24/2006
i don't know what it is with some japanese rest. you walk into an establishment and expect to be greeted with smiles but when you walk into fugakyu, what you get is attitude. all the hosts wear dark clothing like secret service people and have hi-tech earphones, big deal. they also greet you with stink eye, like their **it don't stink. whats up with that. fugakyu is not the four seasons bristol lounge or au jur dhui. its just an upscale japanese restaurant located in a upscale town. lucky for them the food is quite good or i would not go back because i really can't stand the host and hostess stuck up attitudes. the same goes for fugakyu's down the street competition ginza. both poor front end attitude but fugakyu with the exeptionally good japanese food. thats the only reason why i keep going back. but i may change my mind anytime if they keep up the look down attitude. they look like they don't care if you stay or leave.

Yum!

An experience of a lifetime. And you can go back there all the time! Let me give you a little secret: Call in for a reservation and you'll get this special room where you sit on the floor with your legs going down into the floor. The food is very nice especially the Eel Rice, the California Roll, and the Spider Maki. But without the reservation, you can sit at the sushi bar where little boats of sushi pass by on water. Although, they're made of wax so I suggest that you don't grab for them. Beautiful place, I love it!
