The North End is known for its glut of Italian eateries featuring mood lighting and homemade pasta. Within that grouping, there are very few stand-outs, and Monicas Restaurant is one. The flagship of the Mendoza familys triumvirate of neighborhood food establishments (including Monicas Trattoria and Monicas Mercato), this small dining room is an elegant retreat from the bustle of Hanover Street around the corner. The space is painted a friendly light blue and includes a warm bar in the front corner. Named for the Italian 'mama' of the Mendoza brothers, Monica's recently moved from Prince Street to this larger space to accommodate the high demand for its home-style Italian cooking. Never fear, the Prince Street space is still open and now houses the trattoria, a more budget-conscious version of its older sister. Despite these changes, one thing has remained constant: the quality of the food. The homemade gnocchi and pasta ribbons are incredibly popular, paired with succulent sauces and seasonal meats and vegetables. Tip to culinary hopefuls: many of the ingredients used in Monicas dishes can be found in Monicas Mercato on Salem Street. Stop by and you may even get to meet Monica herself as she keeps watch over her sons epicurean empire. Driving tip: Dont even attempt to park in the North End, all youll find is raised blood pressure. Park at the Central Artery Parking Garage and bring your ticket for validation (a mere $3 for 3 hours).
