When you're truly hungry, and the thought of searching for a parking space in hip Davis Square becomes a daunting task, head straight to Avellino's. It's kind of like a pizza/sub shop (you order at the counter), but it's larger than most and a tad more upscale with comfortable booths, granite table tops, and large windows overlooking Mystic Ave. Let's be frank. Mystic Ave. is not the most scenic area of Medford, but one look at the menu (and the hand painted mural of Avellino, Italy), and you'll forget that you've got a view of a KIA dealership. Avellino's offers a bounty of Italian favorites: pizzas and pastas, chicken, veal and even barbecue entrees, and -- surprisingly -- beer and wine to go with. On Fridays only, the menu becomes a big fish story with additional dishes that include fresh shrimp, scallops, calamari, mussels and more. On Saturdays and Sundays, they even serve breakfast beginning at 8AM. Tip: When you order at Avellino's, think big -- the portions can be enormous. But if you're watching your weight, fear not: They also have a Carb Watcher menu with satisfying entrees, including Chicken Al Lemone with spinach, capers, garlic, and lemon wine and sauted broccoli; BBQ Sirloin Steak Tips; and a variety of frittatas made with egg whites. One thing is for certain, no one leaves hungry.

I've never been more disappointe and embarrased.....

I ordered a 2 1/2 foot chicken parm calzone unsliced and a 1/2 tray of plain chicken fingers with sweet and sour sauce off Avellino's catering menu... I called 24 hours in advance and they quoted me a time of 6PM the next day... I was never more disappointed and embarrased... The order showed up at 7PM with problems... The calzone was sliced, even though I didn't want it sliced to keep it hot... And they forgot the sweet and sour sauce... They told me they would send it right over... I called back at 8PM with hungry people, cold food, waiting for the sauce just to be told the sauce isn't included after they told me numerous times that it was... Why would I order plain chicken with no sauce??? 15 minutes later they show up with a bunch of duck sauce single packets... I was never more embarrased in my life... 2 1/2 hours after their quoted time, after reheating the food, after emptying all the packets of duck sauce in bowls, my hungry guests finally ate... I've never been so upset and embarrased, and 100% disappointed in Avellino's unprofessionalism...

Been there done that...

I grew up in Medford and have been to Avalino's many times. I don't know what all the fuss is about. Avalino's does have big portions and is a good spot for lunch if your in the area and looking for bang for your buck. Other wise I don't think it's worth a trip. They may have cleaned up the interior and bumped the prices up, but to me they'll always be the home of the $4.00 dollar big pizza on a broke day when i was little. The price has increased but they will always be a good cheap eat when your in the area. Nothing special.
