It's a rarity these days to discover a local restaurant through word of mouth -- a fact that is less indicative of Boston's dining scene than the well-oiled publicity machine that accompanies it. What with the scrum of glossy magazines vying to discover the Next Big Thing, it's hard to fathom how the North End's Carmen has remained a sleeper for so long. Stationed on one of the neighborhood's most Dickensian streets (a javelin toss from Mamma Maria), Carmen is that rarest of creatures: a restaurant with pitch-perfect atmosphere, an attentive staff and excellent Italian cuisine courtesy of Chef Michael Bernardino, a Michigan transplant trained in the rustic Italian tradition. From its pillowed banquettes to its tiny, inviting wine bar, this place manages to crank up the coziness to 11 without lapsing into the cloying kitsch of so many North End trattorias. The food follows suit, infusing standards with elements of surprise (baked penne comes in parchment, and wild striped bass is glazed with fennel and blood orange preserves) without overdoing the ingredients on each plate. Also exemplary here is the service, which -- combined with the personable owners and general air of conviviality -- ensures that you'll leave Carmen singing arias of praise.

Favorite North End Restaurant
By timhult on 02/20/2007
We have a home in Boston and eat in the North End at least once per month. Our favorite place by far is Carmen. The food is superb and the atmosphere is romantic. It is everything that you would imagine a small North End establishment to be. It is difficult to get a table on weekend evenings, but here's an idea, go on another night.

A Big Disappointment
By friarbri on 05/17/2006
After reading Zagat's and other restaurant reviews, I expected much more from Carmen. The atmosphere is delightful and the service impeccable. However, the food was average at best. The pasta in parchment was bland, the "small plates" appetizers (we had the beets, the eggplant, and the mushrooms) were just so-so, and the steak was lacking in flavor and covered by a mysterious cold green sauce. Did we just hit this place on a bad night?

Not worth the Kitch
By bostonphile on 04/29/2006
If you want to eat at Carmen, better make a reservation for 6PM and be prepared to show up, check in, and then wait for up to an hour for your table. Once seated, although the food might be good, you might feel a tinge of guilt as you observe the masses (all who had reservations) stand in the doorway anxiously awaiting the finish of your meal so that they can step into their "reservation slot." I recently waited for 45 minutes past my reservation time ( all the while assured that my table was being prepared), my table upstaged by friends of Carmen who decided to show up unannounced thus pushing the wait time even further. Is kitch and cuisine worth the flair and negligable service? I think not. If you really want to eat here, grab an appetizer from the place next door and a wine traveler to go while you wait for your table at Carmen or eat somplace else.. there are too many good places in the North End with better service.
