Editor's Note: Cafe Apollonia is closed as of March 2007. Cafe Apollonia in Roslindale Square is not only an idyllic spot for the large local Albanian community -- centered in Roslindale, West Roxbury, Dedham and South Boston -- that has likely missed the authentic food of its homeland, but is also a delight for those who are looking to try Albanian food for the first time. This ethnic cuisine is influenced by the Greeks, Macedonians, Turks and Italians, with an emphasis on the fresh-roasted, well-seasoned meats and vegetables popular in those regions. The restaurant features the cooking of Sheptim Kadiu, who has 25 years of experience as an executive chef and has written a number of cookbooks. Dig into Albanian staples such as lamb shish kebab, eggplant moussaka, grilled panini sandwiches, vegetable Turli and delicious honey-and-cinnamon phyllo dough dessert with custard filling. The main dining area is open and airy, and the busts of Greek statues, murals and columns compliment the Mediterranean accents of the menu. -- Ken Yahns
