Davis Square favorite Diesel Cafe trounces its cross-street "corporate coffeeshop" rival, despite the support of the latter's global empire. Diesel is hipper, cooler and sharper, offering great sandwiches and salads, Toscanini's ice cream and reasonably priced wireless Internet access. It's a comfortable place for everyone; you can catch up on reading the paper or doing homework, hang out with your buddies on a couch or over a game of pool, or check the local postings on the big board in the back. The front offers a platinum view of the street scene, while further back, there are booths, comfy couches and pool tables, all accented by boldly colored walls and cool decor. Diesel Cafe's environment reflects the personalities of its trio of owners, a group of hip entrepreneurs who want to make the place not only fun for its customers, but also for its employees: They host a cafe "prom" each year on its birthday. You won't find anything that cool at that other place, no matter how many board games it sells.

To put it simply, it's a great place to drink java or chai. I go up there at least twice a week. Good job diesel.

It has been some time since I've been there and it was only in the space of two weeks. I was visiting friends and spent every moment in Diesel Cafe. It is a wonderful place with a brilliant atmosphere. It's great to just sit, think, write and look at all the wonders that visit the place. I wish we had a cafe like it in Holland. I'd come back anytime (if I had the money that is)

The Diesel Cafe is my favorite place to hang out. I go there with my girlfriend a lot and some friends. It's a very friendly place with a great staff. The salads are amazing as well as the coffee. It's about time there are more places for gay, lesbian, and bisexual adults to go. In my case, it's great for teenagers to go and not get judged. The place makes me feel at home.

There's no better place in Somerville for writing, meeting friends, and just soaking up the no-pretenses vibe. The owners really care about the place, which is why it draws people of all ages, persuasions, and styles. Unlike some of its competitors, it proves that a coffee shop doesn't have to be corporate to be clean and welcoming.
