Everything you need to know about No Name can be discerned from its location, which lies a fly cast away from the fishing boats that supply its scrod, sole, smelts and shellfish. Sticklers for freshness could ostensibly follow their entrees from pier to plate -- a transition that unfolds in a fraction of the time it takes to find parking near upscale seafood houses like Kingfish Hall and Turner Fisheries. Partisans of fusion-based sauces and tuna tartare will find little satisfaction at No Name, where the kitchen's bag of tricks is limited to broiling, frying, sauteing and boiling. This lack of pretense is a refreshing reminder of the restaurant's beginnings back in 1917, when it was little more than an 11-seat oasis for exhausted fishermen. In its current incarnation, it occupies two spacious floors on the verge of the harbor, accommodating regulars and Zagats-clutching tourists in dining rooms adorned with captain's wheels and life preservers. Those lucky enough to secure seats by the window will enjoy one of the city's most stunning views of the water -- a tableau that doubles as explanation for why the fried clams and seafood chowder have that briny, fresh-from-the-net flavor.

glory days are gone.

This place needs to be scrubbed while the waitstaff gets an attitude adjustment. I've eaten here three times and the best part of the experience was the free parking. I hate the feeling that I'm interrupting something important that's going on for the waiters by sitting and eating an overcooked frozen meal while trying unsuccessfully to get a beverage refill. I'm not going back.

Horrible fried clams
By jak6286 on 06/22/2007
I had heard about how good this place was. We went for lunch and tried the fried clams. Though they were whole clams, they were horrible. They tasted like they had gone bad. Though it has been a few years, I will never go back.

Best Chowder/Worst Seafood
By maisonlb on 05/06/2007
I used to walk from downtown Boston for a taste of the No Name's chowder and seafood. That was many years ago. Today the chowder still holds up, but the seafood is third rate. I took my nieces who were up here from Florida recently to the No Name, describing it to them as Boston's best seafood restaurant (at least that it was I remembered it to be). Was I embarrassed. The fried seafood plate used to be their signature entree. People used to line up for it. Now you need a magnifying glass to see the shrimp and the clams were no better and in fact worse than what Howard Johnson's used to sell. No bellies but strips. Very disappointed.
