Cool young Boston professionals know where to go when they want good inexpensive food in a hip, comfortable setting, and that's Silvertone. The warm, subterranean bar and dining room serves famously good macaroni 'n' cheese and meatloaf, as well as other stick-to-your-ribs comfort food. Its salads and sandwiches also have a substantial following. Located near Downtown Crossing and just a block from the Park Street T stop, this is a popular place for post-work drinks and dinner before going out. Though diners are greeted by a bright blue neon sign before descending into the bar, the small dining room is warm, with red walls and sundry retro-cool kitsch. Almost as famous as its mac 'n' cheese, though, is Silvertone's rule of only seating complete parties. On this, there is no room for negotiation, so warn your chronically late buddies or prepare to wait even longer in this perpetually packed restaurant.

Wine - No Wonder
By gillsull on 10/08/2004
The food is solid and incredibly cheap but the secret here is the wine. Silvertone's has the most incredible wine list in the city - small but all choices are right on and at $10 above the wholesale price - it is the best buy in the city. If you know nothing about wine - ask - or just order off the menu. The choices are well chosen - all hits at your price point. It is a restaurant where you can afford to go often.
