At this barebones place, the tamale king of The Hub, it's amazing what a dollar will buy. Owned by Mexicans and frequented by a nice mix of homesick Central Americans and bargain-seeking gringos, this is also our numero uno choice for real Mexican street food. The pork, chicken and vegetable tamales (this is counter-culture Somerville) are plump and delectable. Steal a cue from the indigenous fans and call ahead to order them uncooked for your next party. Besides tamales we like the half-moon shaped quesadillas and recommend the one stuffed with chorizo and potatoes.

A little hard to find but well worth the effort if you want really GOOD authentic Mexican food, prepared from scratch and delicious. No ambiance but who cares!

Taqueria la Mexicana has THE BEST Mexican food around. I grew up in California, where Mexican food is pretty much considered a staple and have even been to Mexico a countless number of times, so I've certainly had more than enough experience with Mexican food to safely consider myself an expert, and I will honestly say that they have the best Mexican food I've ever had. In addition to the fact that Taqueria la Mexicana has the best tasting Mexican food, it also is probably the healthiest, a word that is rarely mentioned in the same breath as Mexican food. They make everything fresh and from scratch, which is pretty amazing and you can definitely taste it...in fact, I'm actually eating one of their burritos as I'm writing this review.
