Umi is a jewel in the necklace of eateries lining Peterborough Street in the Fenway. The small but welcoming dining room of this Japanese restaurant is a pleasing backdrop for what many have called the best sushi in Boston. Even the sidewalk patio outshines its neighbors, providing tasteful tables with umbrellas and colorful flowers, compared to the picnic tables next door. When the Red Sox are in town, outside diners can hear the sounds from Fenway Park; some may feel the spirit move them to order the Red Sox sushi, a concoction shaped like a sock and adorned with red fish eggs, one of the many unusual and exceptional rolls on the menu. The list of sake choices is also longer than one might expect. Umi is a favorite among locals and a must-visit for any sushi lover. Check the Red Sox schedule before you, though -- the area can be a mob scene during baseball games.
