Classic Italian cuisine is made hip at this centrally located Back Bay trattoria. The large, bustling dining room is especially good for groups, while the mosaic-tiled and dimly-lit enoteca or the stylish bar offer intimacy. (The outdoor patio is a lush oasis come summer.) The kitchen's emphasis is on fresh ingredients, resulting in a daily menu of traditional dishes. Over a dozen chic starters (like crunchy eggplant with spicy tomato sauce, oregano and parmigiano) kick off the dining options. Housemade pastas are constructed from the freshest ingredients; entrees are rich without being heavy. Desserts, including an immaculate vanilla panna cotta, are irresistible.Photo courtesy of Via Matta

The phone number listed for Via Matta is incorrect. It's actually 422-0008. Could someone at CityGuides please correct this error?

One of Our Favorites

When my wife and I want to go somewhere special that has great food, we cannot go wrong with Via Matta. Service is great, food is sublime $ the drinks are also great. We would never go without ordering the arancini (rice balls) which, although they are now only on the bar menu, can be brought to your table. The pasta dishes are amazing. We love to order a few appetizers and maybe one entree and share everything so we each get to sample a variety of the food.

The four of us went in for dinner and sat on the patio....it was a gorgeous night and the patio was so cozy...The food, service and atomosphere was outstanding. Inside was buzzing with people everywhere and the hostess opened the door as you came in with big a big smile.

what's all the fuss about?
By moekmal on 01/25/2005
while the atmosphere is swell, we still don't get all the fuss - again, another restuarant running on buzz! food was perfectly average - we've had much better in this city - and the service all three times we've been there has been terrible! not worth the $. three strikes and you're out in our book!
