Wing it! So orders the exterior northern wall of Anchor Bar, the universally renowned restaurant established in 1935 that is credited with tossing chicken wings into a deep fryer then coating them with hot sauce and butter for the first time. According to "the real story" printed on their oversized menu, Teressa made the world's first batch of chicken wings in 1964 for her son and his hungry pals. (No word whether this inspired mom served up batch number one with traditional, mouth-cooling celery and bleu cheese.) In addition to the wings, an array of traditional Italian pasta, meat dishes, pizza, seafood and basic sandwiches are also served. Buffalo traditions like Friday fish fries and roast beef on weck are menu superstars. Sit in either the newer, sparser section of the restaurant, or else find a table in the older part of the building, where walls are covered with memorabilia and a stage awaits the weekend's live entertainment. Anyone claiming to be a true wing aficionado must visit this unpretentious restaurant at least once for what is destined to be one spicy pilgrimage. Note that you can order ahead of time by calling the takeout window at 716-883-1134. -- Nancy J. Parisi

Wing size

I think overall, people who are not from this area expect big, oversized wings that look like they were on steroids. In preparing good wings, you need a uniform, small wing so that it cooks properly. The wings should be nice and crispy on the outside, and cooked fully on the inside. I am from Colorado, and most of the wings out here (aside from lame sauce), is the fact that the wings are huge, hence, you end up with a undercooked, "raw", nasty wing. I ordered some sauce to make wings, and when I attempted to buy the wings, all I can find are wings that look like a damn chicken leg. I am going to go to a real butcher to see if I can find small, standard wings? The joy of these wings is in the sauce, not how much chicken you can milk out of the wing. Anyway, enjoy your big, raw, wings anyway!

Not all it's cracked up to be

I live in the area and have been to the Anchor Bar exactly twice. The first time the wings were small and not that good. Decided to give it another try before writing it off. Second time we were ignored by the staff for seating. We were passed over 4 times while the hostess seated other people. We finally said forget it and left. Won't go back.

Lived in Buffalo & worked at Anchor Bar with Don Belissimo. Was back there in Jan. and of course had to stop at the Anchor Bar for some of the "wings". They were as good as I remembered. Their Italian Food is still great too! Keep it up.---Pat
