Rate and Write a Review "I won't worship a god that can't dance," reads a grafitto in the men's room at this Buffalo institution. It is a quotation of the German philosopher-poet who gives the place its name, and it well expresses -- as much by its defiant sentiment as its incongruous location -- what the place is about. Nietzsche's (sounds like "knee- cheese") is, first of all, the only Buffalo bar dedicated to live music seven days a week. Nationally known and popular local bands play the back stage while a small stage in the front accommodates acoustic acts and free-form jams that require a more intimate setting. Either way, the sound is fine and there is room for dancing, divine or profane (not to say vulgar). Nietzsche's is at the far end of Allen Street but is its spiritual core, being, along with the Old Pink, one of the oldest and best established places in the city's Boho District. Covers are generally low or voluntary and will get you a spot among the motley regulars. Like all of Buffalo's best joints, Nietzsche's is not elegant. But take a look at the front room's sculptures (including wood carvings by artist-in- residence Cousin) and the yearbook-style visiting artists' autographs on the ceiling. They sure beat neon beer signs. Throw in a staff that will keep you on your toes with science demos and friendly service with a sneer, and you've got one of the most compelling places in town. -- Stephen Gingerich
