George Thorogood and the Destroyers, Leo Kottke, Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, Los Lobos, Junior Brown, Steve Earle, Joshua Redman, Trey Anastasio and Jorma Kaukonen (one of the founding members of Jefferson Airplane) -- though it may look like a retrospective lineup at Madison Square Garden, all of the aforementioned musicians have played this well-known Winooski club. Ever since four guys opened this 500-capacity club in April 1998, the musicians and the crowds have kept coming. The bands range from rock, jazz, blues, techno, country, hip-hop and folk. The fans follow accordingly, depending on who's playing. One night there will be nobody in the crowd under 40 years old; the next night well have a band called moe., and nobody will be here whos over 25, says Kevin Statesir, the club's general manager. The dcor is as diverse as the crowd. The caf is furnished with a large, amoeba-shaped carpet, leather couches, recessed lighting and fresh flowers. The stage is decorated with colorful abstract paintings by local artists as well as original posters and photographs of people whove played at the club.As far as food goes, dont expect a gourmet dining experience: people come here for the music. The caf menu includes hot and cold sandwiches, wraps and appetizers. The garden burgers and chicken teriyaki melts are big sellers, as are the dozen or so microbrews. -- Lauren Kafka

Great time w/ Ryan Cabrera

What a great venue for our daughter's 1st concert experience. We were so close to the stage, and always felt safe w/ young daughters. Thanks for bringing Ryan Cabrera to VT. His 2nd album better than the 1st. Real talent.

GREAT place to hear live music
By ap75021 on 03/02/2007
Higher ground recently located from their Winooski location to a former movie house on Williston Road in South Burlington. The new Higher Ground holds about twice the number of people and has a second showcase room so often there are two separate shows going on the same night. It's not a hole at all as one reviewer suggested but an awesome place frequented by many Canadian acts (April Wine, Blue Rodeo, Great Big Sea, Sam Roberts and the Tragically Hip for example)and local Burlington bands. It has a funky charm that a lot of clubs its size don't even come close to having. There's not a lot of seating but a lot of the talent that plays there is of the nature where seats would only be in the way (Great Big Sea in particular is SO audience participation driven that they've returned many times to this venue and for good reason...they always fill the house). It's easy to find and also doesn't take forever to empty out at the end of the night traffic-wise (a definite plus during Vermont winters)...so if you like experiencing great live music in a club that's not overwhelming, Higher ground always has an intersting lineup...visit them at www.highergroundmusic.com for their calendar...something for everyone!

I heard that Higher Ground was a great nightclub but I thought it was a hole.
