When popular jazz clubs Sneakers, Lost Elm and Rio closed in 1997, the local jazz crowd migrated to Red Square. It's now recognized as one of the best places in Burlington to catch free live music every night but Sunday. Red Square primarily attracts a mature and -- relative to Burlington -- cosmopolitan clientele. It's of the few bars in town where you can order a martini without receiving a smirk from the bartender. The bright and airy space is dominated by copper walls, and the main room features a wall of windows. You can also check out the work of local artists, whose works are exhibited in Red Squares unofficial art gallery. The menu is primarily light fare, like salads, soups and wraps. Seafood is one of Red Square's specialties, and both the fried calamari and fresh cashew burger are recommended. There are three separate bars here, including a daiquiri bar on the back patio Thursdays through Saturday nights. On tap you'll find up to 13 beers, and all but four are local brews. Especially popular are Magic Hat, Long Trail and Schwartz Beer. Mondays are Funky Jazz night; Tuesdays are standard jazz and Wednesdays through Sundays have a varied schedule of music. Theres never a cover charge. --E. Sharon Singer

secret lounge!
By wretchedcupcake on 08/01/2007
Finally! A bar with options. Sometimes I want crowds of hotties, sometimes I want to dance, other times I want to watch a band. But what I 've always really wanted in Burlington is a relaxed, yet funky lounge atmousphere where I can sip my drink and talk. There is a secret lounge at Red Square on the BACK PATIO!!! It is the perfect setting. And the music out there on Saturday nights has been so cool. It reminded me of Europe. I am so freakin' pleased...kudos to them for having all of my needs at one location.

Don't go expecting a Kremlin theme bar--that would way too confusing to the locals. Instead, this pretentious hangout of sophomoric hipsters, overindulged college kids, and ex-hippie professionals is trying hard to copy the intimate Wmsburg Bklyn thing...too bad they push the fire code by packing 300 people into a chokingly small corridor. Big fun indeed.
