Dunleavy's is your basic beach bar turned into a family-friendly Irish pub. Located just a block from the beach, this place features live Irish, folk and blues music on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. It also serves up sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers, soups and appetizers indoors and out all week long. Two of the biggest days of the year for Dunleavy's are Mar. 17 and Sep. 17 -- St. Patty's Day and Halfway to St. Patty's Day, both of which draw crowds of people and involve bringing in big beer trucks and blocking off the street. Jan. 1 is the day for Sullivan's Island's famous Polar Bear Swim, where people meet at Dunleavy's for a drink before heading to the surf for a quick winter dip; the daring, chilly bathers reconvene later at the pub for a big celebration party. -- Carolyn Turgeon

This place is still the best

True local pub. All ages. So many people have met their husband or wife there that there are plaques all over the place with their names. Original pub East of the Cooper. Many have tried to imitate but you can't fake the real family atmosphere where everyone really does know your name! Great wings sandwiches and burgers and so close to the beach!

Dunleavy Caves into PC crowd
By myoung9718 on 06/26/2007
We used to go to this pub, the food was pretty good and atmosphere above average. Now that all of Sullivan's Island is smoke free some of the other bars are loosing money fast and going out of business. The owner of Dunleavy's lead the charge to remove smoking from all bars and rest. in town. If you want a luke warm place to hang out, this is your place. All the locals have moved over to IOP at the Jammers or Acme or go over the bridge to Mt. Pleasant.

An Average Bar

Too many tourists , and no locals on a Friday night. Food was good, but nothing exceptional. I think they ran off some of the locals that used to hang there with the ban on smoking. I would reccommend Off The Hook, instead or Acme Cantina on Isle of Palms if you are a smoker as my girlfriend is.
